Nancy Carol Strickland, age 77, of Pembroke, NC, was born February 9, 1943, to Jepty and Mattie Bell Strickland of the St. Annah community in Pembroke, NC. She departed this life on February 15, 2020, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, NC.
Nancy married Craymon Strickland Sr. on December 2, 1961. The next year, in 1962, they moved to Kansas City, Kansas seeking employment. Born during their seven years in Kansas were son Craymon Jr. and eldest daughter Carol. After returning to North Carolina, they settled in the St. Annah community, bought a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle (Nancy’s favorite car), and had their youngest daughter Terri. Nancy served as a food and nutrition staff member at Pembroke Middle School for fourteen years. She faithfully attended St. Annah Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the St. Annah Gospel Singers and the narrator of the Christmas and Easter plays.
Nancy had a feisty yet nurturing personality which made her a perfect caregiver for her daughter Carol and babysitter for numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Just a few years ago, on a Sunday, Nancy and her granddaughter Tierra rode the golf cart to the cemetery at St. Annah Church. While in the swamp, the gold cart hit a bump and threw Tierra out. While frightening at the time, the moment was the source of much laughter after the fact.
Nancy was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend who always found time to share her smile and words of encouragement. She will be remembered and missed for these and many other unmentioned acts of kindness and love.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Martha Cummings, Jessie Mae Locklear, Waymon Jones, Jeffery Strickland, Andrew Strickland, and Margie Spaulding, and daughter Carol.
