Martha Hardin Obituary

Mrs. Martha Raye Hardin, 85, from Fairmont, NC, departed her earthly vessel and entered her Heavenly Home on February 20th, 2024.

Martha Raye was a woman of many talents including cooking, canning, gardening, and she had a green thumb when it came to her beloved flowers. She loved her cats, especially Mary. Martha Raye retired from the Public Schools of Robeson County after many years of dedicated service working in the cafeteria at Fairmont Middle School. She loved the Lord, and she was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where she was active with her Sunday School class and other church activities. She was also the Secretary of the Lumbee Tribe’s Heritage Haven Elders Group where she enjoyed fellowshipping with the other members and making quilts and jewelry.

If you ever saw Martha Raye out and about, you would likely think you’re seeing double because she was usually with her twin, Dorothy Mae. They’re famously known in Fairmont as “The Twins”. Martha Raye was a determined, hard working and independent woman. She proved her strength when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she beat it like a champ!

Martha Raye Hardin was proceeded in death by a loving, special friend, Douglas Hardin, her parents Clifford and Nancy Lee Hunt, seven sisters, Hattie Jane Hunt, Mary Bell Bartley, Doris Hunt, Betty Carl Oxendine, Mary “Elizabeth” Oxendine, Laura Lee Ivey and Clara Mae Cummings, her son-in-law, Tommy D. Hunt and her Grandson, Gordon “Lee” Hardin Jr.

She is survived by; her twin sister, Joanna “Dorothy Mae” and her husband Will; her children, Gordon and his wife Wanda, Stephaine and her husband Larry, Cliff and his wife Diane, someone she loved as a daughter, Brenda and her husband Randy; her grandchildren, Serene, Cochise, Michelle, Shannon, Marshall, Shawnee, Amanda and Shauna and those she loved as her grandchildren, Kayla, Tamar and Chantel; 30 great-grandkids; her sister-in-law, Retha Mae McNeill; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends at Martha Raye’s home at 3557 East McDonald Rd. Fairmont, NC 28340.
