Leon Maynor

Leon Maynor, age 69, finished his work on this earth on Monday, July 2nd and went to rest with his beloved Heavenly Father.  Born on August 16, 1948, he was the son of Jordan and Myrtle Maynor who preceded him in death along with his brother, Woodrow.

A long time resident of West Lumberton, Leon represented his community as a member of the Lumberton City Council for 23 years, National League of Cities/ Small Cities Council, Lumber River Council of Governments Board and Rural Transportation Board, Robeson County Partnership for Children and Robeson County Juvenile Justice Board.  Hurricane Matthew brought new opportunities to serve.  You could always find him in the community, serving a meal or trying to coordinate home repairs and other needs. He was a retired educator with the Public Schools of Robeson County, spending his career serving the needs of exceptional children.  Many of his working years were with the “Willie M.” program helping children find security and stability.  Leon loved all people but had a special desire to ensure children were given every opportunity to develop and succeed.  He officiated all high school and middle school sports for over 40 years as well as continuing to serve as booking agent for middle school sports. 

With Leon’s passing, Lumberton has lost one of its most beloved bridge builders.  Through his  professional life and his personal life, Leon bridged the gap between people and their needs.  He was dedicated to his family and his extended family of West Lumberton which he loved dearly and devoted his life to improving his community.  But his extended family also included everyone he ever met.  Leon was a devoted Christian, showing love and selflessness to all.  Possessing a servant’s heart without a selfish beat , he practiced his faith and shared his Savior’s love each day by caring for his fellow man. 

Leon leaves behind his loving wife, Jan Hester Maynor, his son Tonka Maynor(Caroline) of Atlanta , GA, daughters Lynn Settlemeyer (Heath) of Leland, Jessica Schmale (David) of Elizabethtown, Stefanie Floyd of Charlotte  and five grandchildren :  Taylor, Cameron, Julia, Andrew and Colton, three brothers Glenn Maynor (Kristen) of Pembroke, Herman Hunt (Janice) of Sunset Beach and Craven Hunt of Baltimore Maryland, brother in law and sister in law Joe and Frances Hester, special friend Sharon Sweatt  as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of precious friends and family.

Memorials may be made to the Robeson County Exploration Station (210 East Second Street, Lumberton) to help support a hands-on history exhibit Leon envisioned for the children or to the Leon Maynor Scholarship Fund (c/o Saddletree Church of God 1508 Rennert Road, Lumberton, NC 28360).
