Larry T. Brooks Obituary

Mr. Larry Trent Brooks, age 79, of Pembroke, NC, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026. Born on October 8, 1946, he was the beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks and the devoted son of the late Mr. John J. Brooks and Mrs. Lela Hammonds Brooks. He was a man of integrity, leadership, and deep love for his family and community. He dedicated many years to education, serving as a respected principal who influenced and guided countless students and educators. In addition to his work in education, he was a successful business owner and entrepreneur. His commitment to public service extended beyond the school system, as he faithfully served on the Pembroke Town Council and the Lumbee Guaranty Bank Board. His wisdom, steady leadership, and heart for his community left a lasting impact.

He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life — fishing, spending time at the beach, hosting fish fries, and most of all, gathering his family together.

Above all, Mr. Larry was a husband, father, and “Papa.” He is lovingly remembered by his five children: Devy Levine Bell (Karen), Lela Brooks Woodell (Jerry), Larry Trent Brooks II (Nikki), John Avery Brooks, and Latisha Sullivan (Rodney).

He was a proud grandfather to Gavin Bell, Taylor Locklear, Kevin Chavis, Dawson Brooks, Pacey Brooks, McKenzie Woodell Bullard, Addison Sullivan, Branlon Brooks, Braylon Brooks, Xander Brooks, Kale Woodell, Xoan Brooks, Kade Woodell, and Xuli Brooks. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Mr. Larry Brooks was preceded in death by his siblings: Stephen Andrew Brooks, John Mark Brooks, Earl Cardell Brooks, Judge Sandy Dexter Brooks, and Maggie Brooks Mercer.

He is survived by his loving sister, Mrs. Vivian “Vib” Atha; his lifelong best friend, Bobby Locklear; and his special nephew, Pastor Davey “Hoggie” Locklear (Linda), as well as a host of relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Adrianna Chavis “Doc”, Kim Locklear, and Veronica Barton for the devoted care they provided in his final days, as well as to Scotland Hospice for their compassionate support.

Mr. Larry Trent Brooks will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a steady voice of wisdom, and a man whose love for his family and community never wavered. His legacy lives on through the lives he shaped, the family he built, and the countless memories that will be treasured forever.
