Mr. John W. Hardin, 83 of Lumberton, N.C., went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 27, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. He was born August 21, 1935, in Robeson County, N.C. to the late Norman Daniel Hardin and Mary Hammonds Hardin. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his beloved wife Jeanette L. Hardin; sisters Glady’s Cummings and Annie Ruth Chavis: brothers Lonnie, Leroy, Edmond and Hubert Hardin.

He is survived by his son, Golber L. Hardin and wife Debbie Hammonds Hardin; his grandchildren, Keith Strickland (Victoria), Jauana StClair (Demarcus), Daniel G. Hardin (Melissa), Monica Camacho (Kevin), Charles Pevia, and Monty Houser; 3 brothers, Walt Hardin, Rob Hardin, and HB Hardin; a sister, Janice Hardin; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. John lived a long and blessed life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and leader in the community. Fully dedication to his family, community and walk with Christ. He was a Korean War Veteran, enlisting at the age of 15. He was a dedicated Deacon of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He was a founding member and first Chief of the Saddletree Vol. Fire Department. He dedicated his life to Sunday visits to multiple rest homes throughout our community. He enjoyed fellowship with the sick and shut in, helping others in need. He enjoyed camping at the beach with his family and friends. He also loved yard sales.

In 1970 when the Epps family gave the property where the Saddletree Volunteer Fire Department presently stands Mr. John was asked if he would oversee the construction of the fire department. When he accepted this project it was built with volunteer help and donations within 90 Days debt free and staffed 35 volunteer firemen. Mr. John was the first Chief at the department. Today it has grown in the county and community. He visited and attended events at the fire department.  In 2019, this year Mr. John was presented with an award from the Fire Department which; he was very proud of.

Mr. John was foreman and superintendent over the construction of one of the largest High Schools in Robeson County, Purnell Swett High in Pembroke NC.

Mr. John also helped with the construction of an auditorium at Robeson Community College. The architects at the time had issues with the construction and didn’t believe it would work out. They thought it might need to be torn down. There stood Mr. John, their Superintendent chewing on his tobacco. He told them “I can fix it”.  That young Architect from then on whenever he had any questions, he always asked Mr. John.

He considered himself a “Jack of All Trades” but a Master of none. Most importantly he was a faithful Child of God.
