Jimmy Ray Locklear, born in Lumberton, North Carolina, to the late Felton and Lizzie Locklear, passed away on November 11, 2025. Jim was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, humor, and steady presence touched everyone who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Samuel Locklear and Jerry Locklear, and his sisters Arlene Faile and Edna Locklear. He is survived by his daughters, Jill Locklear Layn and Julie Locklear Holmes; his sons-in-law, Jeff Layn and Charles Holmes; and his beloved grandchildren, Jordan, Dylan, Eric, and Devin. He is also survived by his brother, Holland Locklear. A lifelong animal lover, Jim leaves behind his faithful dog, Bruce, and his cherished cat, Angel.

Born and raised in North Carolina, he completed his degree at Pembroke State University, where he played basketball and served as senior class president, Associate Student Body Athletic Representative, and more. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy from 1964–1968. After returning home, he met his soon-to-be wife, Carole Ann Maddux, in Long Beach. Remaining on the West Coast, he earned a master’s degree from Long Beach State University and worked for Atlantic Richfield Co. He later went on to graduate from the University of San Francisco School of Dentistry.  Jim practiced dentistry with dedication and compassion for more than 40 years.

After more than four decades in California, Jim returned to North Carolina to be closer to his siblings and reconnect with his roots. He led a simple but deeply fulfilling life, one centered on family and friends.

Jim was an exceptional cook who took great joy in preparing meals for those he cared about. Whether trying new recipes or perfecting old favorites, he approached cooking with the same passion and care that defined every part of his life. Some of his happiest memories came from the family's annual camping trips to Yosemite, where he cherished time spent outdoors surrounded by nature and loved ones and his annual fishing trips with the boys.

Jim’s love of athletics continued throughout his life. He was an avid runner and golfer, was a proud member of Jack Youngbloods South Coast Club, where he played and competed in the sport of handball for over 20 years, he also proudly coached his daughters’ sports teams, always their biggest supporter.

He will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his strong work ethic, his generosity, and the warm, joyful spirit he shared with everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the many people whose lives he touched.

A celebration of life will be held after the holidays. Details on the arrangements will be sent out in the new year.
