Herman "Teddy" Barton Obituary

On February 23, 1934, Herman ‘Teddy’ Barton, of Pembroke was born in the Prospect community to Fernie Barton and Louisanna Locklear Barton. ‘Teddy’, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, completed his journey of 91 years on July 22, 2025.  He passed away peacefully in the comfort of the family home, surrounded by those who loved him most.

In 1958, Teddy married Mary Cattie Oxendine and together, they began their family in the Prospect Community.  To this union, four children were born, Darlene, Herman Jr., Evonia and Doreen.

Teddy was a painter by profession and painted homes throughout Robeson and surrounding counties.   In demonstration of his love for the Prospect community, Teddy served as a volunteer firefighter.    Teddy enjoyed nature and was known far and wide for his detail in crafting homes from gourds for purple martins on the family property.     During the Christmas holiday season, locals and out-of-town visitors came to Prospect to see Teddy’s famous Christmas lights display.  In his spare time, Teddy could be found enjoying a NASCAR race or having a meal at his favorite restaurant, The Cozy Corner.   Known to be a jokester, no one ever left his presence without a smile.

Teddy was devoted to his family and was lovingly surrounded by them throughout his life and at the time of his passing.    He is lovingly survived by a daughter, Darlene, and husband, Clay; son, Herman Barton, Jr., daughter, Evonia, and husband Dwayne, who preceded him in death; and Doreen, and husband Brian.   Teddy was a devoted grandfather.  His grandchildren - Jeremiah, Donald, Christopher, Christian, Arieana, Nicholas - adored him, and he cherished every moment spent with them.   His eleven great grandchildren loved him as well and his stories, laughter, and love will live on in their hearts forever.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, Sally Mae Locklear, Margie Graham, Catherine Locklear, Dosha Jacobs, Nettie Ruth Toby, Stafford Barton, Bernell Barton, Leon Barton and Fernie Barton, Jr.

The family gratefully acknowledges the exceptional care and support provided to our father by Healing Hands, and is deeply grateful for the care and compassion shown specifically by special caregivers Cindy Sanderson, Catherine Locklear, and Shari Brooks.
