Gwendolyn L. Allen Obituary

Mrs. Gwendolyn Locklear Allen, age 71, was born on October 7, 1954, and passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmy and Zettie Mae Locklear; her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Leon Allen "Big Lee"; her sisters, Rena Locklear, Mable Locklear, and Andoris Dial; her brothers, Herbert Locklear, Vernon Locklear, and Randolph Locklear; along with her cherished grandson, Mason Lee Strickland.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through her children: daughters, Tara Denise Oxendine (Casey) and Zenetta Strickland (Kelvin), and her son, Leon Allen, Jr.  She is also survived by her grandsons, Kamron Strickland (McKenzie), Drew Allen, and Brody Allen; her special friend, Alex Lamonds; her beloved pet, Ada; sister, Pandora Jacobs and Antonette Locklear; brothers, Adolph Locklear, Ricky Locklear, Herman Locklear, and Victor Locklear along with a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones.

Gwen graduated from Pembroke Senior High School in 1972 and later earned her degree in Elementary Education from Pembroke State University in 1991. She worked for 16 years at Converse before dedicating 25 years to educating children in the Public Schools of Robeson County. Teaching was more than a profession to Gwen—it was a calling. Even after retirement, she continued serving students because of her deep love for education and helping others.

A faithful and active member of Bakers Chapel Baptist Church, Gwen's faith guided her throughout her life and was reflected in the kindness and compassion she showed to everyone she met. She found joy in visiting the elderly and the sick, ensuring that those who were homebound or in need had food and companionship. Her servant's heart and generosity touched countless lives.

Gwen enjoyed the simple blessings of life. She loved tending to her flowers and gardens, canning vegetables, thrift shopping, attending church senior trips, camping, riding her golf cart, traveling to the mountains and spending time at the beach. Sitting on her porch brought her peace and happiness. She was known for her stylish hats, her pink lipstick, and her warm smile that welcomed everyone.  Gwen was especially known for her delicious pound cakes and chew bread. As a breast cancer survivor, she was passionate about supporting cancer awareness efforts and faithfully participated in Relay for Life.

Above all, Gwen was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, faithful friend, and caring neighbor. Her life was a beautiful example of faith, service, and compassion. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
