On Friday, March 17, 2023, Gloria Jean Connor Carter passed away peacefully in her home in the company of her daughter, Angela and beloved cat, GG.
Born in the family home in Robeson County on June 20, 1934, Gloria was the only daughter of the late Adron and Amy Maggie Lovette Connor. She often told the story of originally being named Anna. But her aunt, the late Inez Barnes saw Gloria Swanson in a movie and insisted her name be changed, going so far as to visit the courthouse and change it on the birth certificate. Gloria grew up working on farms with her family in and around Barnesville, NC, then went on to work at Black and Decker in Fayetteville, NC, retiring after almost 40 years.
Despite being a retiree, Gloria continued working and serving her community through her church, Hyde Park Baptist in Lumberton. She also volunteered for other organizations such as Southeastern Regional Medical Center and the Baptist on Mission with their efforts in Louisiana after Katrina. Known for her love and caring of others, many called her “Aunt Glor-Jean”. Ask her how she was doing, and she often replied “fat and pretty”.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her four brothers: Elton Connor, Sam Connor and Julius (Phil) Connor of Lumberton and David Connor of Hilton Head, SC. She is survived by her daughter, Angela Carter of Lumberton and many nieces and nephews.
The family asks that instead of flowers, please make donations in Gloria’s memory to MEDI Hospice, 514 Peterson Dr, Lumberton 28358 or to Hyde Park Baptist Church, 301 N Roberts Ave, Lumberton 28358.
