David Wesley “Buddy” Chavis, 83 of 2644 Deep Branch Road, Lumberton, NC entered the gates of Heaven on Monday, April 8, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones.
David was born to the late Frank and Ellen Chavis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Chavis, Ronald Chavis, Marvin Chavis, and one grandson Christopher Dwayne Oxendine. David is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Audrey Sampson Chavis. He leaves three children to cherish his memory, Edie Locklear (Ricky) of Mooresville, NC, Jamie Chavis (Mary) of Holden Beach, NC, and Tammy Chavis (Rebecca) of Lumberton, NC. Six grandchildren, Bonnie Conner (Daniel) of Chapel Hill, NC, Ashton Dugan (Marshall) of Mooresville, NC. Chenora Scott (Jerid) of Lumberton, NC, David Chavis (Halle Eicher) of Four Oaks, NC, John Locklear of Mooresville, NC, and Makia Chavis of Holden Beach, NC. Six sisters, Ella Rose Chavis of Lumberton, NC, Nurzie Stickney of Pembroke, NC, Betty Haymore of Sandford, NC, Diane Oxendine (Allen) of Hope Mills, NC, Patricia Locklear of Wilson, NC, and Sheila Burns (Sanford) of Maxton, NC. Six great-grandchildren. A host of special nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
David was a motivator. He talked about what you could achieve. He never talked about failure but always about success. He would remind us we were all responsible for our destiny. David was a self-educated man. He consumed himself with information. He used the information to decide what was good, what was right, what was bad, and what was wrong. David was not shy about expressing his opinions as he could back them up with facts. He loved a good debate and normally won. David was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed eating the game he brought home. David became a gardener. He planted more food than he and Audrey could eat. But he always found people in the community to give the extra vegetables to. He was most famous for his grapevines. David was a man of many talents. He made his livelihood as an accomplished brick mason for over forty 40 years. Like everything else he did, he did it right. People he worked for and with were complementary of the quality of his work.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Maxine Locklear, Mark Sampson, Brandi McGirt and Cheyenne Davis for the care given to David during his time of sickness.
Donations may be made in his memory to Deep Branch Missionary Baptist Church, 4082 Deep Branch Road, Lumberton, NC 28360 or through the website www.dbmbc.org.
