Mrs. Cora Dean Brewington, 77 years old of Lumberton, NC, journeyed to her heavenly home into the arms of Jesus on July 30, 2026 at UNC Health Southeastern. She was surrounded by many of her loving family and friends.
     Mrs. Cora was born in Dillon, SC on May 30, 1949. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Sterling Page Locklear and the late Ms. Gladys Locklear. She was the loving and devoted wife to the late Mr. Larry Brewington, sharing 34 years of marriage. Mrs. Cora is preceded in death by her son, Craig Brewington; brother James Locklear; sister Betty Henderson; sister Mary Locklear; brother Larry Lane Locklear; brother Gerry Lynn Locklear (Slick); nephew Cary Mitchell Chavis (Spanky).
     Mrs. Cora is lovingly remembered by her daughter, LaNette Locklear and son-in-law Darrell F. Locklear of Pembroke, NC; a son/grandson, Corey Adam Brewington of Lumberton, NC; sister Jeannette Locklear Cooper (Peter) of Pembroke/Raeford, NC; sister Sherry Annette Lockear of Lumberton, NC; sister Susan Locklear of Lumberton, NC; brother Gary Wayne Locklear of Lumberton, NC; brother Cody Locklear of Rowland, NC; brother Keith Smith (Stephanie) of St. Pauls, NC; stepmother and friend Sue Locklear of Rowland, NC; best friend/sister Debra Brooks of Lumberton, NC, best friend Lori Sellers of Fairmont, NC. Mrs. Cora also leaves to cherish her memory: Bethany Locklear (grand-daughter); Kyra Brewington (grand-daughter); Courtney Brewington (great-granddaughter); Carey Brewington (great-grandson); Keithan Brewington (great-grandson); Chrysler Brewington (great-granddaughter); Carrington Chavis (great great-niece); special friends that have shared decades of laughs, memories, and love Judy Revels, Margaret Honeycutt, and Drucilla Strickland and a host of family and friends.
     Mrs. Cora worked at Robeson Community College and retired after 35 years of service. She was first hired at the original Robeson Technical College as an Industrial Sewing Instructor at the Barker Ten Mile campus. Mrs. Cora then became a Recruiter for the Continuing Education Department, Adult High School, Human Resource Development, Adult Basic Education and Compensatory Education Development Programs, traveling Robeson County to set up classes in various schools, churches, community centers, anywhere she could start a class. She then advanced into the position of Coordinator for Continuing Education Adult Basic Education and the Compensatory Education Development Program. She was involved in helping with the General Educational Development testing and the Competencies Testing assisting with Adult High School graduation. Mrs. Cora served on the committee for hiring two of the Vice President’s for the Continuing Education Department, as well as for various other positions, such as Directors, Coordinators, Recruiters, Instructors, and clerical positions. She also served on several committees at RCC. Mrs. Cora was a member of the North Carolina Community Adult Educators Association (NCCAEA) and served on several committees within this organization. She was a board member for the Robeson County Church and Community Center; committee member of both the Sheltered Workshop and the Housing Authority of Robeson County. She worked closely with Dr. Lucia Karnes to bring the Orton-Gillingham reading approach to RCC, as well as organizing a state-wide conference on dyslexia at RCC. Mrs. Cora cared very deeply for all the adult students she assisted, especially the Comp Ed classes, always believing that individuals with disabilities were capable of learning and developing skills to help become independent thriving adults.
     Mrs. Cora was known as a straightforward true to self, individual, drawing respect from everyone around her. She loved shopping and had a passion for dancing. Christmas was her favorite holiday and for many years enjoyed baking homemade candies and chocolate layer cakes for many to enjoy. She also decorated wedding cakes and was a beauty consultant for Mary Kay cosmetics for many years. Mrs. Cora loved meeting new people and making new friends, leaving her infectious personality on everyone she met. Most importantly, Mrs. Cora was a faithful servant to God. She was an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist, being a member of the choir and youth Sunday school teacher. Later she moved to her home church of West End Baptist. Mrs. Cora was a faithful servant and an inspiration to so many.
