Bundy Locklear Obituary
Bundy Ross Locklear, 89, of Pembroke, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on September 29, 2025. He was born on January 31, 1936, and lived a long, full life devoted to faith, family, education, and community. Bundy is survived by his loving wife of over 66 years, Cheryl Lee Locklear (Lowry), whom he married on February 6, 1959. Together, they built a strong and loving family that was the center of Bundy’s world. He is also survived by his four children: Victor Ross Locklear (Katrina Locklear) and their children Johnathan, Ethan, Kaylyn, Chelsea, and Nathan; Athena Locklear Smithwick and her children Justin, Ayanna, and Brian Joseph; Marla D. Locklear; and Nelson Lee Locklear (Christine).
A proud graduate of Pembroke Senior High School’s Class of 1954, Bundy was a dedicated student athlete, playing on the basketball team all four years and serving as Senior Class President. He cherished the lifelong friendships formed during those years and continued to meet regularly with his classmates throughout his life. Bundy earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Pembroke State College (now UNC Pembroke) in 1958. He later served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962, achieving the rank of SP5-E5 while serving as a Chemical Lab Specialist at Fort Detrick, Maryland. After his military service, Bundy dedicated more than 31 years to teaching as a junior high and high school educator. He also taught Driver’s Education to countless students throughout the Pembroke area, helping generations of young people learn both in and out of the classroom. His impact as a teacher, mentor, and role model will be remembered by many.
Faith was central to Bundy’s life. For over 60 years, he was a devoted member of Berea Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served faithfully in numerous ways. His warm spirit and steady presence were a blessing to his church family. Bundy was also a founding member of the Braves Club at Pembroke State University and an active member of the Jaycees for over 20 years. A lifelong supporter of UNCP, Bundy took great pride in his community and its growth. Those who knew Bundy will remember his kindness, sense of humor, and his ever-present smile. He rarely went anywhere without candy in his hand and a UNC-P pin on his lapel — small symbols of the generosity and pride that defined him. Bundy’s legacy is one of love, service, and faith. He touched countless lives through his teaching, his church, and his friendships. His laughter and light will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
Services will be held at Berea Baptist Church in Pembroke, NC, with visitation beginning at 2:00 PM and the funeral service following at 3:00 PM.
