Mr. Alex Strickland Jr. was born on September 29, 1933 and departed this life into God’s hands on Friday, November 3, 2023 at the age of 90.
He was born in Robeson County as the oldest child to the late Silas and Brover Strickland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillie Brayboy Strickland; six sisters, Annie Neal Locklear, Helen Brayboy, Roanna Lowry, Shelby Deese, Mildred Locklear, and Catherline Locklear; and four brothers, Wallace Strickland, Paul Strickland, Harry Dean Strickland, and Silas Strickland Jr.
Mr. Alex Strickland was a loving Christian, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, best friend, and a lifelong member of New Prospect Holiness Methodist Church. He served many roles at New Prospect Holiness Methodist Church such as: being a board member for over 35 years and as the treasurer for the Adult Men’s Sunday School class. He retired after 32 years as the Grounds Supervisor of what is now the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Since 1976, he was a faithful member of the Pembroke’s Lion Club. He was very meticulous and took great pride in his yard work. He was well known in the community to assist others in maintaining their yardwork. He was a fan of the Braves; both Atlanta Braves and UNCP, but he loved Duke Blue Devils Basketball. He was often known to call his closest family and friends and brag about their wins. He was an avid early morning coffee drinker with his friends for many years. He could almost always be seen wearing a hat from his large hat collection. Those who knew him well, knew him as “Hubu”. To know him was to love him.
Mr. Alex Strickland Jr. leaves behind to cherish his memories; a daughter, Elaine Strickland Lowry (Craig); two grandchildren, Craig Elliott Lowry (Candace) and Anya DeAnn Oxendine (Skyler); six great grandchildren, Eli Lowry, Callie Lowry, Cesilie Lowry, Caydie Lowry, Lily Oxendine, and Lexie Oxendine; one sister, Diane S. Locklear of Rowland, and one brother, Rev. Jimmy Strickland (Frances) of Rowland; and a host of relatives and friends.
