Tonya Marie Locklear, age 50, of Maxton, NC began the journey to her heavenly home on January 14, 2020. Her body is now healed. Ms. Locklear was born on June 7, 1969 in Mecklenburg County to Mary Elizabeth Pevia.
Ms. Locklear is preceded in death by her father, Clyde Locklear, Jr.
To cherish her memory and to live out her legacy are her mother, Mary Elizabeth Pevia; her six children, Ryan (Keenya) Locklear of Pembroke, Taylor Locklear and Allie Brooks of the home, Breanna (Matthew) Oxendine of Pembroke, Khinsley Locklear of Fayetteville, and Trenten Locklear of Lumberton. She is also known as “Mimi” to five awesome grandchildren, Mattix and Karysn Oxendine, Brinley and Tanner Locklear, and Izley Hunt. Ms. Locklear is also survived by a brother, Michael (Angela) Wedmer of Lumberton; one sister, Brandi (Aubrey) Oxendine of Lumberton; and a host of family and friends, all of whom supported and aided her through a prolonged illness.
A devout Christian, Ms. Locklear delighted in telling others about the forgiveness and eternal salvation that she found in Jesus Christ. Ms. Locklear was a member of the Women’s Ministry at Praise and Worship Ministries, as well as on the Usher Board. It was this faith that enabled (and accompanied) her to fight a three-year long battle with cancer. While she was not ready to leave her family, Ms. Locklear was ready to meet her Savior. She is at peace today, resting in the arms of her savior.
Ms. Locklear’s non-judgmental persona made her a “mother” to everyone she encountered. Whether it be a hug, a home-cooked meal or just plain advice, she was always “there”, even to the end. Her legacy of being a “walking, talking miracle testimony” goes forward through those who knew and loved her. Rest easy in paradise Tonya- we will miss you beyond words!
