Philip Ray Locklear

Mr. Philip Ray Locklear, 77 of 509 N. Jones St Pembroke, NC was born October 18th, 1940 to the late Ms. Leah Locklear of Pembroke and the late Mr. James Hammonds of Florida. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving wife on January 4th, 2018 at Morrison Manor, Laurinburg, NC.

   He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Rose Marie Locklear; five children – Joseph Preston Locklear (Lindsey) of Pembroke, DeShaun Ametric Dial (Kelton) of Pembroke, Bobbie Ann Jacobs of Lumberton, Eric Ray Locklear of Hope Mills, and Tongee Sabrina Bennett (Barry) of Clayton; five grandchildren – Alannah Rose Locklear, Nolan Bradley Dial, Leah Gracelyn Dial, Darius Ethan Bennett, and Rhiannon Lynn Bennett; one aunt Ms. Jolley Locklear of Pembroke; caregivers – Audrey Britt, LaTisha Carter-Chavis, Amanda Jacobs, Tamara Locklear, and Pennie Thomas of Scotland Regional Hospice. Along with immediate and closest family, Philip leaves behind a host of loving relatives and dear friends.

   Philip or “Phil” graduated from Pembroke Senior High, class of 1959 where he and his classmates prided themselves on who could out-do the others best. His motto being “If you can do it, I can do it better!” He served our country proudly in the United States Air Force from August 24th, 1961 to May 26th, 1965 with honorable discharge as a Senior Airman. He was assigned to the 63rd Communications & Electronics Maintenance Squadron (Military Air Transport Service) with training at Chanute AFB, Ill. Afterwards he attended Pembroke State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics in 1967.  He was known for his unrivaled understanding for anything mathematical.

Philip worked several years as a Manager of Quality Control at BF Goodrich, Converse Rubber Co., and Plant Manager of 5 G’s Industries. He, Rose, and Joseph left Robeson Co. in 1977 with Alaska set in their sights. He was employed by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company from 1978-1994 achieving rank of Level V Technician, where he received several awards and special recognition plaques, a testimony to his selfless dedication. He retired in 1994 and returned to his first home to spend precious time with his family and mother, reestablishing old friendships and making new ones.

   Philip never met a stranger, was always ready to help in a time of need. Loved good conversation and fellowship. Was an avid fisherman and loved all things nautical. He mastered the skill of knot-tying which was second to none. He shared these qualities with his family and all who knew him. He could tell the most detailed tales of hunting and fishing of any man, a true outdoorsman.

   He loved his family. Loved his community. Stood for what was right and did not entertain ungenerousness. Despite the odds being stacked against him, he was rooted in the assurance that his strength came from The Lord. He prevailed time and time again. He was quick to tell you “It is Well with My Soul!” and that he was going to be with grandma. At the end of his extended illness he proclaimed “It was worth it!”
